I have been teaming up with Gill Jones over the last few months, we did Art Trek in September last year and now we have a couple of exhibitions coming up that you might be interested in.
Tonight, 1/3/19, sees the opening of a mixed exhibition at Bowjangles Gallery, in Bow, near Crediton, Devon. The Private View is tonight 5pm - 9pm, which we will be attending. See my Facebook page for more details.
Then in Torquay....
Natural Affinity: Featuring works from Gill Jones and Jenny Smy - 4– 23 March // Tuesday-Friday: 11:00-18:00 // Saturday: 10:00-18:00 // Artizan Gallery welcomes esteemed North Devon guest artists Jenny Smy and Gill Jones to Torbay for a three-week joint exhibition of new works in March. Working diversely across a variety of mediums, the two inform their practice with a sustained effort to challenge their own working habits, adopting a transitory approach to form and style. In this exhibition, Natural Affinity, works lean towards abstraction, though elements of figuration remain across both collections, for a complete body of work that upholds the pairs passion for nature that they have previously been recognised for. "I draw my inspiration from the area in which I live and the proximity of the sea," says Jenny, "Living in Devon, I am lucky that I only have to walk a mile or so to get to water. There are several rivers nearby and the local marshes and estuary often provide the inspiration and motivation for my work." Natural Affinity will launch on March 8th, 18:00-20:00 with the exhibition running from 4-23 March more details on the March exhibition can be found at www.art-hub.co.uk/mar19. - Artizan, 7 Lucius Street, Torquay TQ25UW - Tel: 07522 509 642/01803 428626 - Juliebrandon@artizangallery.co.ukwww.artizangallery.co.uk - www.art-hub.co.uk
We will also be hanging another exhibition at the local hospital, NDDH, on 2nd April. A couple of years ago we held a very successful exhibition there with friends along the Xray corridor. More details to follow.
It’s that time again! The prestigious Westward Ho! & Bideford Art Society Annual Exhibition takes off on Saturday 11th August. The private view is on Friday 10th 7 - 9pm. The exhibition continues until Saturday 15th September. I look forward to seeing you all at some point during the show.
Over the last few weeks I attended the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama for a fabulous workshop using oils and cold wax medium. The workshop was led by the American artist Jerry McLaughlin, who has recently released a book on Cold wax. This sensuous medium is a delight to use and speeds up the drying process of oils. I will be creating more works using this medium in the future and plan to showcase some of them during Art Trek 2018.
Art Trek 2018, which previews on Friday 14th September will continue until the end of September. This year will be the first time that I have taken part in this event and will be hosted by Maggie Davies at her studio in Portland Street, Ilfracombe. Three of us, Maggie, Gill Jones and I will be showing recent and new works. I am displaying some of these on my instagram page. Do have a look.
The showcase of new works at the Jill Rousseau Gallery at 2 Cooper Street, Bideford, EX39 2DA, was very successful with good sales.
Sadly, I have had to forego the teaching in Bratton Fleming, due to family commitments.
Last year we looked at mark making with abstraction in mind and had fun with inks etc. Since Christmas, we have been looking at Kandinsky and colour psychology, and now we are having fun with collaging.
In May 2018, I attended another course at the Newlyn Art School in Cornwall, where we looked at the work of Patrick Heron. This course let by the artist Gareth Edwards was very enjoyable and I recommend courses at this venue.
A recent 'Painting Without Brushes' workshop at the Pilton Arts Group in Barnstaple was very successful with some wonderful loose works by the participants. Here are some comments from a previous workshop.
"Thank you again for an inspiring morning, I wish I could have been there for the afternoon too."
"This just a note to say thank you for an enjoyable day.You put in such a lot of thought into the day and the sheer workload of preparation was huge, so I wanted to say how much it was appreciated both by me and my partner, who doesn’t paint and remarked how very kind and encouraging you were towards her and her efforts."
"I enjoyed the day very much, thank you."
I am available for workshops using my specialties in oils and acrylics. Just get in touch.
